Players short

An Altman style series about a community theatre in a small Rust Belt city called Player’s Short is the latest project that we’re glad to be apart of. The TV pilot was shot in the span of three days shoot and directed by the talented Jacob Norlin in Newark Ohio. Central Grip & Lighting and Central Cameras calibrated on the technical side to help bring a delightful cinematic experience to the screen. Actors delivered a seamless transition of time periods, each take was like removing a silk veil. So much can change in the editorial but I don’t want to spoil it before it premieres therefore I won’t elaborate. Although admittedly behind the scenes it felt very meta. The production was about a production and I’m writing about that same production. Among the ethos there was mutual spirit of wanting to make the best movie we could make. A sense of precision and discipline was prevalent among the cast and crew.

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.”

-WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Cinematographer and Gaffer; Andy Young and Andy Eggert work complemented each other’s so well. I can’t recall the use of any filters or diffusion on camera. It seemed Mr.Eggert lit the scene entirely by eye. It was all location, time of day and stunning art direction. No grand shots of half-blue moon lighting. My observations were of more art than great science. The visuals were beautiful and believable, as a budding student of film I can certainly say I’ve learned a lot from the two wise gentlemen.

Working with a crew that knows what they want and doesn’t vascillate much is always a pleasure. We didn’t seem to be confined by choices predicated on a modest budget. We took the time to make things right and then do them better and it thats why I think it will turn out great. It cetrainly didn’t hurt that the crew moved very quick. No one was waiting around looking at thier watch (except me anticipating lunch, the meals were a treat. I would have worked for food.) I know it wasn’t flashy but so well done I hope people see it. I think its beautiful and entertaining. A story told from the players perspective.

“No more talking about StarWars on set please and thank you”
